CHAPTER 03 / 11 · CONTEXT ENGINEERING
Core idea
Cumulative work is not resident context
The name billion-context describes cumulative processing over a long session. It does not mean the model attends to one billion tokens in a single forward pass.

THE NOTEBOOK
Concise learning notes · source-grounded mechanismsThe key idea is not to create a model with a native billion-token attention window.
Instead:
So a session may process billions of cumulative tokens over time while only a much smaller amount of information remains resident in the model's active context at any one moment.
In short:
Keep recent information verbatim, fold older information into recoverable summaries, and retrieve historical details only when they become relevant again.
CHECK YOUR INTUITION
Does one billion cumulative input tokens imply a billion-token attention window?
Choose an answer to reveal the reasoning.
